Welcome at stevenbolgartersnakes.nl.
My name is Steven Bol and on this website I would like to share with you my passion for North American Gartersnakes and Watersnakes.
I will first try to finish the Dutch version of the website. In the mean time I will start translating in English.
A (partial) translation into German will follow later.
I breed different (sub)species of Gartersnakes and Watersnakes. Under “Species” you can find the complete list of species I am currently breeding. In the past year (2010) I bred Nerodia taxispilota and Thamnophis eques insperatus for the first time. So these (sub)species are added to the list.
I am also busy setting up breeding programs with Nerodia sipedon sipedon, Thamnophis sirtalis pallidulus, T.eques diluvialis and a new subspecies of T.eques from Lago de Zirahuen. So hopefully I will successfully breed them in 2011 for the first time or in the near future.
The precise location and habitats from which most of my breeding groups originate are known. This provides useful information how to keep the snakes (for example the interior terrarium decoration, necessity and duration of the hibernation etc.)
On this website you can find information about the different species that I breed and the precise habitats where they originate from. For further information, see… Species.
Several of my publications will be made available on this website.
In these articles I describe my experience involving observations in the wild and how to keep and breed gartersnakes.
The publication “Breeding and care in captivity of the Santa Cruz Garter Snake Thamnophis atratus atratus (Kennicott, 1860)” can be used as my most recent care sheet about Gartersnakes and it will hopefully answer many basic questions about care in captivity, see … Publications .
My breeding programs are set up to prevent inbreeding. This is done by selective breeding with unrelated snakes from the same subspecies and preferably from the same population. Because of this my captive bred snakes are very well suited to set up breeding groups with. Information about origin and background will always be provided with my snakes through a so called “breeding certificate”.
My Weblog features some of my observations on Gartersnakes and Watersnakes in the wild. The observation of these fantastic snakes in their natural habitats adds an extra dimension to my hobby. Besides that, it provides valuable information about the care of these snakes, see… Weblog .
